TOPICS OF INTEREST
- Sex Crimes Against Minors
One of the most distressing crimes is any kind of sexual assault involving a minor. Because of a recent court case, it has become almost impossible to get a conviction for repeatedly sexually assaulting a child. Representative Oshiro has worked to pass House Bill No. 2207 which, along with a constitutional amendment proposed by Senate Bill No. 2246, will permit a jury to convict a person of sexual assault of a minor if the jurors unanimously find that the defendant committed at least three prohibited acts, even if the jurors cannot unanimously agree on the identical three acts.
Criminal Record Data
The public has a significant interest in accessing criminal record data, but the persons referred to or named in the data obviously have an interest in protecting their privacy. Representative Oshiro knows that this is not a simple problem that can easily be resolved with simple legislation. In an effort to address all the concerns involved in the issue of releasing criminal record data, House Bill No. 1984 establishes a committee consisting of members from the Judiciary, Attorney General's Office, Public Defender's Office, and the American Civil Liberties Union to analyze all sides of this debate and suggest legislation
.
- State Fish – Humuhumunukunukuapua'a
Everyone knows the humuhumunukunukuapua'a is Hawaii's state fish, right? Representative Oshiro found out from a friend that it was only the official state fish from 1985 to 1990, and decided it was time to make permanent the rectangular triggerfish as Hawaii's state fish. Representative Oshiro introduced House Bill No. 1982, H.D. 2, to once again make the humuhumunukunukuapua'a Hawaii's state fish.
